Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel has proposed drastic cuts to the U.S. Military that would revert our forces to pre-1940 levels.
The U.S. Constitutions clearly states that one of the DUTY of the Federal Government is to "...insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence..." (not misspelled, this is how it is written on the original U.S. Constitution as far as I know). Cutting down our Military is not the way to do it.
I am well aware that technology has been advancing also in the field of military weapons, their use and "administration"; but technology cannot supersede simple human power, especially when things like our electric grid (this is just an example) is so vulnerable. How long can we run those trucks, drones, planes, tanks, if we have no electricity to run fuel pumps after the fuel trucks and similar are empty? I know, I know, it looks like I am stretching quite a bit. but let me give you another scenario.
Drones carry a lot of electronics. How good would they be if hit by an EMP discharge? Do you thing my head is stuck too far up the sci-fi ass? O tactical small nuclear weapon can discharge an Electromagnetic Pulse strong enough to disable all the drones in the area. Are the drones protected from such an attack? What about the base with all the computers and antennas to remotely control the drones? What about tanks, airplanes... Do they all have EMP shielding in place? Now, how many countries have the capability of small tactical nuclear weapons
While China and the new Russia are building up their armies, here we are decimating ours. It just does not sound like good policy.
And I do not want to go into the economic aspect of drastically cutting down our military and the repercussions that would be felt in the communities hit by similar cuts.
Ok, I haven't said anything new or profoundly interesting. I am just trying to set a background.
Keep the motion of this push to reduce our military further than it has already been reduced and lets add a couple of more facts:
- A large number of armored personnel carriers have been distributed to different law enforcement agencies around the country.
- Several federal agencies have been purchasing ammunition in bulk and the kind of ammunition used for actual conflicts and confrontations, not for target practice (whatever excuse they come up with ); I did not know that in some of these agencies they were even carrying weapons.
I let you make your own conclusions.
